Introduction

Rust-Stained Dawn

You stand on the reshoot set of Children of the Corn III, a wrench in your hand stained with motor oil, sweat dripping from your brow. March 10, 1995. The morning light of Los Angeles filters through the studio vents, casting shadows over cluttered cables and equipment. You were just dumped by your ex-girlfriend, Xu Man—or rather, abandoned after being humiliated. Her words still echo in your ears: "You're nothing but a nerd. This is as good as your life gets." Coupled with the cold phrasing of the academic probation letter, your bank account currently holds a mere $150.25.

"Are you okay?" You look up as a tall figure walks toward you against the light. Unstyled, shoulder-length blonde hair, an oval face, a sharp jawline, and skin so pale it seems to glow. She wears an unbranded cotton tank top, denim shorts, and a pair of worn-out canvas shoes. It's Charlize Theron. Twenty years old, a nobody on set just like you.

"Looks like you need this." She hands you a bottle of water, her green eyes looking straight at you without flinching. Her hands are calloused, her nails neatly trimmed.

"Thanks," you say, taking it, your voice raspy.

"I've seen that look before." She squats down to meet your gaze. "Like falling into a black hole, or a raging hell. But don't let it beat you. I came from South Africa with only a thousand dollars in the bank, no agent, no house. But I won't stop. And neither should you."

Her words are brief and direct, yet they feel like a beam of light. You recall your past life: she is the future Oscar-winning actress, the wild rose of South Africa. But right now, she is squatting right in front of you, dust coating her calves, yet shining like a diamond.

"The sun will rise again tomorrow," she says, patting your shoulder before turning to walk away.

You watch her retreating figure and tighten your grip on the wrench.

The afternoon reshoots finally wrap up. Charlize sits on an apple box at the edge of the set, eating a sandwich while reading a crumpled script. After a moment of hesitation, you walk over.

"Mind if I join you?" She looks up at you, nods, and slides over to make room on the box.

You sit down and notice her script is covered in highlighter marks and handwritten notes. She eats quickly, as if she's in a rush.

"How many movies have you been in?" "Just extra work," she shrugs. "What about you? What do you do?" "Computers. Programming." You don't mention Beihang University or Caltech. Her eyes light up. "Like a hacker?" "More like building systems," you reply.

Charlize smiles, revealing a row of neat, white teeth. "This industry needs smart people." She takes a sip of water. "You know, when I first got here, I couldn't even afford rent. Once, I starved for two days and fainted on set. When I woke up, I just kept going."

Your heart stirs. This is her—the future dazzling superstar, currently just a struggling immigrant.

"I'm going to make it." She looks straight at you, no boasting, just pure stubbornness. "And so will you."

"Just watch. We're both going to be diamonds."

She stands up, brushes the dust off her pants, and strides away. You notice she walks fast, her steps firm. Suddenly, the System flashes in the corner of your vision, and a quest prompt pops up: New Quest: Help Charlize Theron secure her first major role.

Night and Choices

Back in your Caltech dorm room, you sit on the edge of the bed as the lights of Los Angeles begin to glow outside the window. The tiny room holds only an old computer, stacks of books, and pizza boxes. You open the System interface—the companion system that came with your rebirth, which allows you to exchange points for scripts, novels, and tech ideas.

You look up Charlize Theron's future: she won't make her breakthrough in 2 Days in the Valley until 1996, but you need to step in now. But she is so independent—will she accept help? You need a natural way in.

The System prompts: "Spend points to exchange for the prototype of Karl Franck's original screenplay The Devil's Advocate—this script is suitable for Huang Xiaoming but does not exist yet at this moment. You can modify it and pitch it to the market." But what she needs most urgently is a breakthrough.

You look out the window, where the neon lights of Hollywood resemble a terrestrial Milky Way. You recall the end of your past life: fifty years old, penniless, standing on the Golden Gate Bridge. But this time, you have the System, your memories, and her.

"This time, I won't let you fall again."

You pick up the phone—even though you don't know who to call yet. But you already have a direction.

This time, you will use your knowledge of the future to exchange for scripts, novels, and tech ideas to rewrite your life and help her ascend to the throne.
