Ziyun Pavilion: Night Thoughts

Moonlight filters through the gaps in the curtains, flowing across the desk like a silver-white river. Inside the study of Ziyun Pavilion, the air is thick with the scent of ancient scrolls and magical ingredients, while the fireplace flames dance, casting shadows into menacing shapes.

You have just finished another round of deciphering ancient sealing techniques, a lingering magical tingle still prickling your fingertips. Outside the window, the night over Jinling City hangs like heavy velvet, its sparse lights making it seem as though the city itself is holding its breath in the power vacuum left by the Great Seal.

"The message spell is ready," whispers Isolde, the female knight beside you, her armor gleaming softly in the firelight. She respectfully hands you a blank magical parchment, waiting for you to write your instructions.

Just then, the parchment stirs without any wind, and lines of writing gradually materialize—it is the sigil of Fengyi Palace. Empress Huang Shuyu summons you to the palace immediately. The handwriting is elegant, but the ink trembles slightly, betraying the writer's inner unease.

You narrow your eyes, your fingertips brushing against the cold jade seal. It seems this night in Chang'an will be far from peaceful.

A power vacuum is the perfect opportunity to seize control.

Candlelight flickers inside Fengyi Palace, casting shifting shadows across the Empress's face. Huang Shuyu sits upright on her phoenix throne, her black-and-crimson court robes immaculate, and her Nine-Dragon Four-Phoenix crown gleaming with a dark luster under the lights. Seeing you enter, she lets out an imperceptible sigh of relief, though she quickly recovers her poised reserve.

"Please, sit," she says, her voice gentle yet carrying an undeniable trace of exhaustion. "I had no choice but to summon you so late. There are whispers in the palace... Have you heard them?"

You sit down in silence, your gaze subtly sweeping toward the screen in the corner—a maid hides behind it, but her heavy breathing reveals she is no martial artist.

"The Princess Royal, Ying Cangyue, has been in frequent contact with military commanders lately." The Empress gently fingers a string of jade beads. "She is highly ambitious. If no one keeps her in check, I fear..." She raises her eyes to look directly at you. "Since the Great Seal, His Majesty is no longer here. The empire of Longqin needs a new pillar."

Her fingertips turn slightly white; you can feel her struggling to maintain her composure. She needs you, just as you need her authority to gain legitimacy. But her bottom line is her family's interest—you must not rush.

"I have few people left to trust in this Zichen Palace."

You lift your teacup, take a small sip, and return a meaningful smile. "Rest assured, Your Majesty. I shall naturally share the burdens of the crown."

This game has only just begun.

Imperial Garden: Confrontation

Stepping out of Fengyi Palace, the chilly night wind sweeps into your sleeves. As you walk along the corridor through the Imperial Garden, preparing to leave, a clear female voice rings out from the shadows.

"So late, and yet the Grand Preceptor is still busy in the palace?"

Ying Cangyue steps out from behind a plum tree, dressed in tight-fitting martial attire, her long hair tied up high, and a sword at her waist. She plays with a token in her hand, her gaze as sharp as a hawk's, a faint, knowing smile playing on her lips.

"Your Highness is no less dedicated," you say, stopping and keeping a subtle distance from her.

She chuckles and takes a step closer, pressing in. "Let's not beat around the bush. That woman—my nominal sister-in-law—cannot give you what you want." Her gaze is burning and direct. "I need your magic, and you need my army. Together, the world will be ours for the taking."

Her confidence is almost fierce, but you can see the calculation in her eyes: she, too, is testing your ambition, seeing if it is grand enough for you to demand equality with her.

"Are you so certain, Your Highness, that I am willing to submit to you?" you ask calmly.

"Not submission," she corrects, "cooperation. A partnership between the strong." She extends her hand, palm up—an invitation, and a challenge.

You look at her hand, one that has held both swords and chess pieces. The night breeze sweeps through the Imperial Garden, carrying the faint sound of string and wind instruments from a distant palace orchestra.

To choose an alliance, or to fight alone? Every word spoken tonight will be etched into the destiny of the empire.

With the descent of the "Great Seal," all legendary mages have fallen into a deep slumber, and the empire's power pyramid has collapsed in an instant. As a newly initiated mage, you find yourself thrust into this perilous power vacuum. Will you become the gravedigger of the old order, or weave your own web of power amidst the political gambits of noble ladies and socialites? In this chaotic struggle for power known as the "Silent Year," every daily social interaction and intimate contact will become a stepping stone for you to erode the old authority and establish a new order.
